John Deere

Robotic Guidance for Engine Sealant Application

John Deere is the brand name of Deere & Company, an American corporation that manufactures agricultural, construction, and forestry machinery, diesel engines, drivetrains (axles, transmissions, gearboxes) used in heavy equipment, and lawn care equipment

Problem

  • In their Tractor engine manufacturing plant they have to apply sealent along the edges of the engine block
  • For automating the sealant application , a robot has to apply the sealant from a nozzle attached at the end of the robotic hand
  • Due to dimensional variantions in the fixture and conveyor, there will be variations in the sealant positions which is very critical

Solutions

  • Designed a solution based on the 2.5D profile sensor and which will solve a system of equation to find the 3D dimensions of the engine block edge.
  • The profile sensor is attached to the end effector of the robot along with the dispensor via a motor mechanisam.
  • Written a software which will communicate with the profile sensor, get the profile dimensions, filter the values and solve the algebric equations, map them to robot coordinates sent the same to UR-robot
